AT&T Buys Wayport, Becomes Wi-Fi Giant
AT&T announced today that it will be acquiring the privately owned Wayport Inc. Wayport Inc is one the United States’ leading Wi-Fi service providers. The acquisition is set to take place through one of AT&T’s subsidiaries.
This acquisition should certainly take AT&T’s service to the next level by adding Wayport’s core capabilities and its enterprise customer portfolio to AT&T’s unbeatable Internet Protocol and 3G network. Cell phone users, among other should be wearing broad grins right about now. The offspring of this corporate marriage will be better broadband connectivity, at home, at work, on the road to the land far far away, in short, everywhere.
The acquisition does more for AT&T than giving it better, stronger services to provide, although that is of course a primary focus of any sane acquisition. AT&T has increased its presence in the wireless world. It will now have 20,000 hotspots with the United States and on the international front; we’re talking about 80,000 hotspots. This means that not only AT&T consumers, who number in nice millions, but consumers all around who use Wi-Fi to stay connected on the go, will be sending their blessings to AT&T. In short, if ever an integration of businesses was logical and desirable, this one is.
