A new report has it that Samsung’s first Android smartphone will not be the S8000 we’ve all been drooling over, instead, it will be the I7500 which is due for release this June. The specs are pretty good, especially considering that we have only the G1 and G2 to compare it to, and just the G1 in North America. Specs are;
1. Android 1.5 OS
2. Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, dual-band UMTS/HSPA
3. 528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7200A CPU
4. 3.2-inch HVGA capacitive OLED touchscreen display
5. 5 megapixel camera with LED flash
6. Wi-Fi
7. Bluetooth
8. GPS
9. 8GB internal flash memory
10. microSD slot
11. 3.5 mm stereo jack
12. Metal case, 11.9 mm thick
The image you see is mock up, of course, but if it’s accurate, then paired with the 3.2 inch display, the I7500 will be a pretty big handset. As long as the goods are all there, we don’t really mind. According to the same source, O2 Germany will be releasing the I7500 in June for about €300 ($397 US). Can Sammy boy really pull it off in June though….wondering.

According to an internal document leaked from T-Mobile, the company is about to launch a new handset from Samsung, the T349. Now while the T439 seems like the average entry level handset, the internal document refers to it as the “20-key messaging phone”. If you take a close look at the document, after the initial eye strain passes, you’ll notice that the T349 has the same kind of SureType keypad that is found on the BlackBerry pearl and Pearl Flip. Among other specs you’ll find;
1. 20-key keypad
1.3 megapixel camera w/ video capture
2. SMS, MMS, Email and IM
3. Bluetooth
4. Speakerphone
5. Photo caller ID, alarm clock, calculator,
6. Mobile backup
7. GPRS connectivity
The T349 will be available for both pre-paid as well as post-paid users by May 20th. So who’s up for it?

Top of the rumor list is the word that Samsung is preparing to introduce another handset in the Omnia line, called the Omnia Pro. Sure the name sounds fishy, but according to the rumors this Omina will have a full touchscreen placed stylishly on top of a slide out QWERTY, just like HTC’s Touch Pro and Touch Pro2. Other specs of the Omnia Pro (reportedly) include a 3.5-inch 800 x 480 AMOLED touchscreen display, Windows Mobile 6.1 (which will be upgradable to 6.5 upon release) and a 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus, a flash and video recording capabilities. Now since this is still in rumorsville, those of you who a want a QWERTY on their OmniaHD better get to praying this one pans out. The handset you see in the image is a mock up of the device from the source of the rumor.

Sure the Nokia N97 is a handset to die for, the flagship device which is the first from the Finnish company to feature the S60 5th edition, but the choke factor is the price tag that somehow manages to be huge no matter where the handset pops up. As of late, the N97 has popped up on TIM’s website and the price tag is a walloping € 599! That’s roughly $800 USD…and that too from a carrier! Granted that TIM is a bit loony when it comes to pricing handsets, for example the N96 sells for €599 too. But one does wonder what on earth is the N97 cost to partners, for TIM to charge such a high price. We’d like to believe they just love to suck the money from their subscribers…but even Espansys UK has listed the unlocked N97 for £669.99 ($980 USD)…insanity!

And Nokia has done it again, and by it I mean a good thing. It has launched a web browser called, “Easy Meet” and its basic purpose is to share content online. But that is ot all, for all our corporate drones out there, this means you can call a virtual conference on your cell phone. There is no software downloading involved, all one need do is log on to the Easy Meet site, emails or SMS are sent to all the invitees who simply have to click back and join the corporate fun, or a distant cousin’s wedding, I don’t like to attach labels. IE6 however will not support this feature. Other features include a virtual White board, digital record of minutes of the meeting (thank God, that is one boring job, I mean you actually have to pay attention to what’s going on) and of course the ever popular chat among the participants. File sharing is also possible for formats like PPT, JPEG, and PNG. If you’re interested just log on to easymeet.nokia.com

The idea of using solar powered mobile handsets is not new, but it is one that hasn’t seen mass production yet. But according to Japanese mobile operator KDDI, Sharp has made the first solar powered as well as water proof mobile handset that will be available in the Japanese market, particularly the KDDI network. The handset will give a minute of talk time or two hours of standby time by leaving the handset in sunlight for 10 minutes. The battery can be powered to about 80% of its capacity through solar light. The only irritating thing about this handset may be the possibility that it may become a ‘Japanese only’ device that never makes a world debut. Ah well, maybe they could inspire other manufacturers…nothing wrong with hoping. Although an improvement in the 10 minutes of charging to get 1 minute of talk time ratio should definitely be a priority.

According to T-Mobile Germany’s website, the carrier will release an official update for the ‘Cupcake’ in May. The update will bring G1 users an on-screen keyboard, video recording/playback and A2DP support. This is the very same update that G1 users have all been waiting for. But the website didn’t mention if the update would be available for the U.S. crowd too. Of course it does stand to reason that if it’s coming to Germany, the U.S. installment can’t be far behind.

Gone are the days when owning the mist expensive smartphone on the block got envious glances your way, now a day, people would just wonder if your head was screwed on right. Sure if you can afford it, more power to ya, but given the current economic conditions, everyone is saving. And among the carriers to make sure they deliver maximum value for customer dollars is Orange across the pond in Europe. The newly launched Orange Vegas, which is available in both black and pink, has dual-band GPRS touchscreen device features a 2.4-inch display, 1.3 megapixel camera, FM radio, MP3 playback, 128MB of internal memory and support for a microSD card up to 4GB — all packed into a handset that weighs 84g, and you’ll scream when you hear the price. £48.50 ($71 USD) on pay-as-you-go. What’s even sweeter is that when Vegas users top up their account with £10, it comes along with 300 free texts, a £10 credit and unlimited access to Bebo, Facebook and MySpace. Someone should talk to them about the name ‘Vegas’, they obviously mistaken it to mean something cheap and rational, ah well, great phone, great price.

Resisting the temptation to take a swing at RIM for goofing up with the launch of Facebook 1.5 for BlackBerry such as the messed up calendar after the new app was downloaded or the pelting of requests to put a phone number on their profile sent out to all your friends on Facebook…yup, none of it was fun. Hence we have Facebook 1.5.0.32 just point your ‘Berry browser to http://www.blackberry.com/facebook. Another thing, if you have 1.5.0.31, be sure to restore your default calendar ala Options > Advanced Options > Default Services after you install the update.
