Sony Ericsson was celebrating the 4th of July in a new fashion, rolling out to new Android beauties. Now while this is still a rumor, it seems that Sony Ericsson has a gorgeous new Android handset along with a pretty ugly transparent display-equipped handset, which would be the company’s first.

The Android powered handset is codenamed ‘Rachael’, bears a full touchscreen. As rumor would have it, the handset will be part of the Xperia lineup and the big touchscreen will rest on top of a Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon processor, an 8 megapixel camera with auto-focus, a 3.5mm audio jack, 7.2Mbps HSDPA and 3D graphics capabilities. Awesome! The handset should be announced later this year, and may well be one of the most drool-worthy handsets Sony Ericsson has brought out in a while.

And now for that transparent display bearing handset, ugh! Codenamed ‘Kiki’ the handset is said to feature a glass display that can be viewed from either side of the device. There isn’t anything that looks like a keypad, so we can’t be sure how anyone is supposed to interact with the handset. The best guess is that the images you see are very early mockups and SE will change the design drastically before (and if) the handset ever reaches the market.

In all the excitement about the Hero, the G1 v2 and Morrison, we mustn’t forget that Samsung also has its first Android powered handset coming out. The i7500 Galaxy is due to hit markets in UK this month. Now the handset may not be the best handset on the face of the planet, it certainly will be one the best spec’d Android phones at the time of its release. And while everyone is waiting with baited breath for the i7500 to eventually hit T-Mobile in the U.S. looks like the brits get to be in on the action first. That’s life for ya! O2 will make the unveiling this month. The i7500 features a big bright touchscreen, 8GB of internal storage, 5 megapixel camera with flash, 3.5mm audio jack and Android 1.5 all wrapped in a 12mm-thin case. Envy.

In the event that the BlackBerry Tour isn’t getting you as high as you’d like, Verizon seems to be getting ready to bring another adrenaline powered beauty your way; Samsung Glyde 2. According to a post on Howard Forums by member StandardsDT, who apparently took some sneak shots of the unannounced Samsung Glyde 2 at a friend’s place. Of course the friend won’t be inviting him over for a while, but hey, we’re all up in the air to have a new handset to ogle at. Now specs aren’t clear yet, but it defiantly has a big bright touchscreen, looks like AMOLED. Then there’s the side sliding four-row QWERTY and the familiar TouchWiz UI. StandardsDT also thinks that the handset has an on-screen QWERTY keyboard and an accelerometer for orientation awareness as well, though it doesn’t work in all areas of the UI. Now let’s hope we can get word on the pricing, detailed specs and of course launch date soon. Enjoy the imagery till then.

After a mere month on sale, Rogers Wireless has lowered the price tag on the three year contract for the HTC Magic and Dream by $50. That means all you Canadians who are interested in either device can get it for a reasonable $99.99. So why the price drop? Word has it it’s a twofold reason;
- Rogers wants as many people as possible to be able to afford the smartphone along with the (very profitable) data plans.
- It seems like convincing Canadians to buy a smartphone from a manufacturer other than Apple or RIM.
Plausible reasons. Hopefully the price drop should move handsets out of Rogers’ stock pile.

Aww, and it seems like only yesterday. Well the Apple App store officially turned to 1 year old this past Saturday. Apple began the celebrations early of course, putting up a dedicated page with a colorful banner on iTunes that screamed the occasion. So how is Apple going to celebrate the 1 year birthday of the App Store that made it millions? By trying to get you to buy more apps of course. The App Store birthday page is filled with Apple’s “favorite apps and games” alongside buy links to make sure you won’t have any trouble buying them. But in all fairness, Apple App Store has been one of the most influential marketing moves in the past decade, with over 56,000 apps and over 1 billion downloads not to mention every competitor coming out with an app store of their own, this was one idea to reckon with.

Canadians have more to celebrate about, the TELUS BlackBerry Tour, HTC Snap and Touch Pro2 have all shown up on a Best Buy Mobile flyer. TELUS hasn’t announced the two HTC phones yet, but their coming up on Best Buy’s flyer means the official announcement shouldn’t be far, since the flyer is valid from July 3rd to July 30th. The flyer doesn’t contain any interesting details like pricing or release dates. But it’s leaked information in the right direction.

After only a day or so of being available to the masses, Geohot has just upgraded its jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS, purplera1n. You now have RC2 which brings support for Windows 7 and 64-bit rigs. Among other enhancements are; improved payload execution, kernal patches, correction of terminal errors and more. Support for Winterboard is still absent but the way things are looking, it’s not far. OS X compatibility will be around soon as well. If you’re running RC1, upgrading to RC2 and running it is as easy as installing the new build on top of RC1. Of course those running OS 3.1 need not apply.

Tired of waiting for the Dev Team to finally make good on the iPhone 3GS jailbreak? Well so is Geohot. The original unlocker of the iPhone has come out with his own jailbreak of the iPhone 3GS, with help from some chronic devs which has been named purplera1n (purplerain). Cool name, but the jailbreak currently only supports Windows Mobile (excluding Windows Mobile7 and 64-bit). OS X support is on its way though. You get your jailbreak here. Enjoy! (Ultrasn0w works, but it’s a bit flaky at the moment so there’s still a while to go before its perfected.)

According to Tech Church’s sources in Asia, Apple has ordered a ton of cameras, the kind that it puts into its iPhones. Now Apple is unabashedly proud of the iPhone 3GS’s video capabilities so this rumor becomes believable; the new breed of cameras are reportedly going to the iPod s and iPod Touch. If this pans out, low-end digital camera manufacturers and specialty companies like Flip will have their work cut out for them maintaining their customer base. Sure video recording or photo quality won’t really beat a dedicated device, but it certainly gives folks who don’t want to carry multiple devices a pretty nice option. Let’s see how soon we’ll see the ‘iPod TouchS’.
