The Nokia 58oo XpressMusic has sadly now lost a lot of the hype that first surrounded this full touchscreen music phone that was the first S60 5th Edition phone. But recently, Nokia Malaysia had a little event where it announced a few interesting improvements coming to the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic courtesy of a firmware update, including;
• Kinetic scrolling
• Improved camera performance
• Enhanced home screen (like the N97)
• Improved response time
If the 5800 XM is currently the star of your universe, then these new features will probably rock your world. And this is just one of those rumors that will pan out a lot sooner than anybody expects.

Living in Canada with an extra $199.99 is tough. But Rogers will be lightening the load on all such Canadians suffering from these awful circumstances. Rogers has just released the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and is out there for all of Canada. The XpressMusic as you may as well have guessed by the name is highly concentrated on Multimedia features and functionality. It’s a S60 5th edition Smartphone with 3.2-inch 640×360 resistive touchscreen display, 3.2 megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens, auto-focus and dual-LED flash, 3.6Mbps HSDPA connectivity, Wi-Fi and aGPS. Oh and get this, an 8GB microSD card come with it. And although the phone itself is good, it still pales in comparison to the other phones out there in the same pricing range. I mean if you want to spend $199.99, you do it on the best that you can get which as it turns out is not the Nokia XpressMusic 5800.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic owners now have a new update for Flash Lite from Adobe. Flash Lite 3.1, however, being true to Nokia fashion of releasing an update for one region while the rest seethes in anger is honorably upheld this time around too. In any case, the good this is that Adobe didn’t wait for Nokia to release a firmware update, instead the upgrade is available independently. Here’s the change log to Adobe;
1. Improved Web Browsing, 91% of top 500 internet sites
2. Flash 9 (AS2 only) support
3. Local Connection / HTML Text / GetURL_target / CSS support / WMode
4. H.264 support / Improved video support (smoothing, seek)
5. Improved memory handling for images
6. MP3 Streaming support
7. Support for hardware acceleration – Flash Lite 3.1 supports OpenVG 1.1 to improve flash rendering performance on capable devices
8. Linux Reference port
Hopefully, since this isn’t a firmware upgrade, the Flash Lite 3.1 will soon be available for all regions. Those who have already gotten the update love the new and improved in-browser experience. To check if the update is available in your region, turn to App Update on your 5800.

Fresh from China are images of what is touted to be Nokia’s next touchscreen Symbian music phone in the XpressMusic series, the 5900 XpressMusic. As with all handsets of such origin, we tend to be cautious, remember the N97i? Of course, if this is true, then you’re looking at the images of the would-be successor to the 5800 XpressMusic. Little is known about the specs; a 3.5 inch touchscreen and a 5 megapixel camera are on board along with a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a kickstand. Also the source says that there might be no 3G, and if that’s the case, allows us to cry ‘fake!’ once more. In any case, get your eye full with all the imagery.

Symbian Freak reports that a new firmware update is available for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. The update, however, is not an Over The Air (OTA) one, rather it is currently available for certain codes (meaning certain locations). Of course it stands to reason that the update will definitely go global soon, everyone deserves some 5800 XpressMusic update love. While no official word on what the update is specifically addressing, early adapters say that it has improved the camera quality and pictures taken now look nicer. Good Nokia, the camera work on this baby needed work. Symbian Freak has also cited the latest GfK Retail and Technology figures for Jan-Mar 2009, and claims that the 5800 XpressMusic is the UK’s number one MP3 player. (Scratches head). Could be, but we won’t put our money on this claim just yet. Remember the last time Nokia got excited about the 5800 XpressMusic, let’s not repeat history.

Can you hear that? It’s the sound of Nokia having 2 million capacitive touch screens back up into its garage. It seems as If Nokia has listened to the call of the wild err… call of the users … and is looking to rectify what many deem to be major flaw in the 5800 series. It’s supposedly looking to replace its resistive touch screens with capacitive ones and there is a good chance that Nokia will stick with this tech change as its soon to roll out new models. Personally I don’t know what to say, I mean we had an iPhone whose screen scratched too easily and ended being sued and we had the Nokia 5800s who’s resistive touch screens made scrolling easy and also made it possible to use other devices for navigation AND it didn’t scratch so easy either. Nokia will feature the capacitive touch screens in all other 5800 that it makes and they are likely to be in stores by the May-June period. lets hope the public favors Nokia with a positive response.

Well of all the stunts to pull, you’d have thought execs were more rehearsed in their enthusiasm. You remember the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, the handset that made Steve Erkel look cool, not because it was goofy looking o anything, but because of all the delays and hitches that came while it was trying to walk into the limelight. So about the 5800 XpressMusic, seems like some Nokia exec was so excited about the Flagship device, he accidently blurted a 13 million units sales figure to shocked press people. Of course Symbian Guru was quick to catch on and found out that the 13 million figure was hit by the 5310 XpressMusic. Now that’s more like it. The 5800 XpressMusic, we love you Nokia, but that was one jinxed phone.

And finally, good news for Symbian fans out there; seems like the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic NAM is fixed and good to go. All that was needed to fix the 3G connectivity issue was a firmware update, and Nokia has supplied the cure in the form of v20. The music handset is reportedly now back on shelves at Nokia Flagship stores however, and pre-orders will be shipped from Nokia’s fulfillment center within the next 1-2 weeks.
As for when current 5800 XpressMusic owners can get the update, we are left in the dark. Enjoy your new updated 5800 XpressMusic and pray that the speakers don’t blow.

It really wouldn’t be a normal news day if I didn’t write about the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic NAM now would it (*sigh). So after the first S60 5th edition bearing handset was launched a day earlier, Nokia Flagship stores ran into inventory troubles. Sales were halted for a day, and then when they did begin, dismal news that the speakers would soon die began circulating. Oh then the 3G connectivity bombed in some regions of the United States, hence the handsets had to be pulled for a short period of time. So now, hopefully with all fingers and toes crossed, Nokia has given the 5800 XpressMusic a firmware update that makes it 3G friendly once again, and the set is good to go. Let’s hope the next time I write about the 5800 XpressMusic NAM, it’s to report record breaking sales and lots of user love.

Well Nokia has finally made a formal confirmation about the internet connectivity issues of the 5800 XpressMusic NAM. It is said that some of the 5800 XpressMusic handsets are having 3G connectivity issues, but these are present in New York and Chicago, while Dallas and Miami are all set. Nokia is currently combing through both the devices as well as the networks used to pinpoint the problem. Here’s some PR ‘explanation’;
We have learned that some Nokia 5800 XpressMusic devices are having issues with 3G performance. This is a very isolated problem concerning only the North American market* and is not specific to any other region or country. We are currently investigating the matter further to find a quick remedy to the situation. Customer satisfaction and product quality are very important to Nokia and we take all quality and customer satisfaction-related issues seriously. Nokia is investigating the issue. Existing customers of the 5800 XpressMusic who experience 3G signal issue with the device are advised to contact Nokia Customer Care.
*only NY and Chicago affected, in Dallas and Miami the devices are working OK. The investigation is ongoing on the device itself and the network used in these cases.
There’s still no word on how this will affect the supply of 5800 XpressMusic Nam handsets, but admittedly this isn’t the launch that Nokia had dreamed of for its first S60 5th edition handset.
