Finally some price sense, or as some would like to call it; a farewell to early adopter tax. In any case, T-Mobile has just shed a few pounds off its BlackBerry Curve 8900 price and it’s now down to $149.99. That makes it $50 cheaper than it was before, thanks to a $100 dollar rebate. RIM’s WES Could Bring LTE BlackBerry, BlackBerry 9630, etc

blackberry logo1 RIMs WES Could Bring LTE BlackBerry, BlackBerry 9630, etc

RIM will be holding the World Enterprise Symposium, the WES, from May 5 to May 7. The Symposium is host to all things BlackBerry and ‘Berry fans await it religiously. As for this year’s WES, many good things are expected and waited for. Among these, the most highly anticipated is the BlackBerry Curve 8900 care of AT&T. there are a good many folks out there running the unlocked Curve 8900 on AT&T, but the official manuals for the Curve 8900 have been finalized and this a major indication that AT&T is gearing towards an official launch. Of course, the most awaited announcement will be that of the BlackBerry 9630 aka Niagara.

The 9630 is a blend of the size and styling of the 8900 Curve and Storm with the ever popular keypad from the Bold. It’s rich on features too with a gorgeous 480×360 display, 3.2 megapixel camera, GPS, OS 4.7.1 and last but not least the to-die-for combination of dual-band 1xRTT/EV-DO from the CDMA side, quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and the single and lonely 2100MHz band of UMTS/HSDPA from the GSM side. So who gets it and when? Well, Canadian/CDMA carriers can expect to have it on display as early as May, while Verizon will be launching it around June/July. As for AT&T, well, RIM doesn’t seem to mind all the trouble AT&T seems to get in with its device launches so it will probably set a date with them too. Of course, rest assured, by the time AT&T actually gets around to launching the 9630, the world will have moved on.

On the software front, seems like BES 5.0 is now cooked. The ‘gold code’ is now being tested, which means RIM is ready for the unveiling.

RIM also seems to be taking the next step in its technology, like other manufacturers, and will likely make an announcement about its work in the LTE department. That’s right, good-bye yesterday’s 3G, and hello tomorrow’s LTE. Whether there will be just talk of progress made or an actual display of the device is uncertain as of yet, but expect good things. There’s also talk that RIM might unleash devices with processors that top 1GHz, but this may not necessarily be at the WES. Well, that’s it. Now let’s see what WES confirms.

Is Rogers Raising Prices Of BlackBerry Devices To Make Up For The $30M Acquisition Expenses?

rogers wireless logo11 Is Rogers Raising Prices Of BlackBerry Devices To Make Up For The $30M Acquisition Expenses?

Lately, Rogers has raised the price tag on its three year contract for some of its most popular BlackBerry devices. For instance, the past few days saw Curve 83xx go to $149.99 (up $50), Curve 8900 to $224.99 (up $25) and the Bold go to $299.99 (up $50). So what gives Rog? No, it’s not the supply of the handsets has plummeted and market forces are putting upward pressure on the prices, it actually seems that Rogers is taking the acquisition check out of the BlackBerry sales. Here’s what an inside email tells us sent to Rogers employees from the VP says;

On Wednesday, the senior executive team realized that they were over budget $30 million dollars on their cost of acquisition. How I don’t know why it took so long. [sic] They then did their knee jerk response. Your DBM’s and other local managers know nothing more than this and are in the dark as much as we are on this other than we were told VERBALLY that in market quotes would be honored for 30 days from today. The exception lists are due Monday and only for non named accounts. I have requested in every region for a positioning statement and to this moment have not heard a response. If it makes you feel any better the retail has even more uncertainty.

Exactly what has Rogers been splurging on so much that they went so horribly over budget? That’s what we’d all like to know, especially before forking over the extra buck for a shiny new BlackBerry.

For the folks who ordered their BlackBerry Curve 8900 early, guess there wasn’t much to do but wait for the delivery man to show up. But for the many that didn’t place a pre-order, the BlackBerry Curve 8900 is live on T-Mobile’s website. The Curve 8900 will cost a cool $199.99 with a mail in rebate and 2 year contract, but keep in mind you’re paying this for a 3.2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and UMA support, BlackBerry PIM services and the 4.6 OS for the Curve. Now Best Buy is also carrying the Curve 8900, but so far the buzz is that stock is short. Which leaves the option of getting some customer service support from T-Mobile and paying the extra $50.

So a few good citizens didn’t catch the early order train for the BlackBerry Curve 8900, no big deal. Here’s your chance to catch up. An image that just showed up on Engadget and reveals that you can get the Curve 8900 for a very reasonable $149.99, of course with a crummy two year contract, but when can you exactly escape that. AND it’s better than paying $299.99 right? But of course if you insist on getting a SIM-free Curve 8900, dole out a pretty $649.99 and please yourself. So which handset will you be throwing under the rug to get this one?

Here’s some more rather interesting news about the BlackBerry Curve 8900 that’s coming to T-Mobile. The guys at Berry reporter got their hands on a document which says that a limited number of business users can get a BlackBerry Curve 8900 on January 19, 2009. That’s a good month ahead of the official February 11 release date.

Now in the event that T-Mobile actually has some business users (sorry) you will need to be an employee of a company that has a business account with the big Pink. So check with you company or wait like the common folks till February 11.
