The Nokia 58oo XpressMusic has sadly now lost a lot of the hype that first surrounded this full touchscreen music phone that was the first S60 5th Edition phone. But recently, Nokia Malaysia had a little event where it announced a few interesting improvements coming to the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic courtesy of a firmware update, including;
• Kinetic scrolling
• Improved camera performance
• Enhanced home screen (like the N97)
• Improved response time
If the 5800 XM is currently the star of your universe, then these new features will probably rock your world. And this is just one of those rumors that will pan out a lot sooner than anybody expects.

Say hello to the Nokia N97 firmware update. The firmware version was recently updated on Nokia’s RDS service, and the Nokia N97 got similar treatment. According to Nokia Conversations’ Twitter account, “N97 SW 1.1 (11.x.021)” came out July 1st, in time to make Americans really appreciate the country’s birthday. Of course the firmware update won’t get rid of the off-centre space button, utterly ridiculous. But at least software bugs will be resolved. Now it may be a while before all regions/product codes get their update, so be patient. If you have the update up and kicking, let us know what you think.

The end of last year had Verizon Wireless promise a firmware update that would allow users to Unlock GPS on their handsets which subsequently allowing them to use Google maps and Windows Live Search and thus being able to bypass VZ’s navigator which collects one expensive road tax. This news has been confirmed by PhoneNews that the promised update for the Touch xv6850 Pro has been approved. The update will also give Visual Voicemail support to the phone, something that usually comes with a $3 per month charge. To boot all this saving is the EVRC-B codec support which improves call handling. (Cause you know you wanna handle that call real well). The update is not available directly through either Verizon or HTC but PhoneNews has it for us early. So those of you who haven’t already cracked the GPS can head on over to PhoneNews and get this update. Of course as it’s not under the Verizon or HTC label yet, proceed at your own risk. Samsung Omnia and Saga owners, keep your fingers crossed for an update that will pimp up your sets too.

Symbian Freak reports that a new firmware update is available for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. The update, however, is not an Over The Air (OTA) one, rather it is currently available for certain codes (meaning certain locations). Of course it stands to reason that the update will definitely go global soon, everyone deserves some 5800 XpressMusic update love. While no official word on what the update is specifically addressing, early adapters say that it has improved the camera quality and pictures taken now look nicer. Good Nokia, the camera work on this baby needed work. Symbian Freak has also cited the latest GfK Retail and Technology figures for Jan-Mar 2009, and claims that the 5800 XpressMusic is the UK’s number one MP3 player. (Scratches head). Could be, but we won’t put our money on this claim just yet. Remember the last time Nokia got excited about the 5800 XpressMusic, let’s not repeat history.

Things are bit shaky for the BlackBerry 8230 aka the Pearl Flip, on Bell. Earlier this week, 2 days after the BlackBerry 8230 launch, the handsets were recalled owing to a software issue. The recall was then taken back while customers with OS 4.6.1.162 got an SMS on their handsets urging them to get a firmware upgrade to OS 4.6.1.182. Those already rocking the OS .182 need no bother. This means that no sales will be interrupted and you can carry on with your plans of buying a Flip smartphone.

The Samsung Instinct is one of Sprint’s most popular handsets, or at least that’s what Sprint says and we’ll take their word for it. The Instinct did break a good number of records for sale soon after Sprint brought it out. Those who’ve used it, love it. And there’s a bit of good news; as of now, a firmware update is available for the Instinct. The version is ES.M800 CA10 and it’s bringing a few very tasteful treats your way, including;
· New RSS Reader
· Dynamic zoom via a new slider control in the browser
· Smart zoom (double tap)
· Various bug fixes
Over the air update is available and network push updates will be starting today too, but which region will get its first is not clear yet. So if your update doesn’t land of its own, be proactive and initiate it by yourself, it’s definitely worth it.

In an obviously smart move, Nokia has released a firmware update for the 5800 XpressMusic. The update gives greater stability to the S60 touchscreen device. It also adds a Google search bar, improves the web browser and the media player. The upgrade is software version 11.0.008. You can get the application from the Nokia Software Update application.
The 5800 XpressMusic had a number of bugs that needed fixing, some of which were;
1. Last word disappears when selecting receiver in SMS
2. My Nokia: phone displays “#” in front of Application name.
3. During Back-Up & Restore operation, calendar entries are not restored
4. Operator menu link within Welcome application
5. Invalid message pops up before playing the file received via Bluetooth.
6. Input Method, VKB just display number when selecting a WLAN access point which contains a password.
S60Inside.com has indentified other issues as well. But the bottom line is, this firmware upgrade ought to fix loads of them.
