Seems like T-Mobile is going to spice up the G2 (if we’re still going by that name, but we all know the other moniker, MyTouch). The images that were deeply embedded in the Walmart Roadmap from T-Mobile reveal that the G2 will have a 5 megapixel camera instead of a 3.2 megapixel one. The color options will also be a bit different, label the color you see in the image why don’t you…ivory maybe? We may well be looking at a July release from Walmart and a $179 price tag with a 2-year contract.

It’s about high time Canada got its share of Android. And Rogers is just the carrier to do it, the official announcement is in; the HTC Dream (G1) and the HTC Magic (G1 sans QWERTY) will arrive ‘exclusively’ at Rogers on June 2nd. And while we can safely assume Rogers will make good on the HTC Dream release, let’s just keep our eyes peeled for more info about the HTC Magic making it out by that time.
Press Release:
TORONTO, May 7 /CNW/ – Rogers Wireless today announced the exclusive Canadian launch in June 2009 of the HTC Dream(TM) and HTC Magic(TM) smartphones, the first cellphones in Canada powered by the Android platform, allowing for fast and easy access to a wide range of Google(TM) mobile services, including Google Search(TM), Google Maps(TM), Gmail(TM) and more.
“Who else but Rogers would be the first carrier to offer Canadians the first chance to join the mobile revolution with a choice of not one, but two, handsets powered by the Android platform?”, said John Boynton, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Rogers Wireless. “The HTC Magic offers a responsive touch screen and the HTC Dream delivers both a touch screen and a slide out QWERTY keyboard. Both devices offer outstanding wireless internet search capabilities and a full suite of applications that run two times faster on Canada’s fastest mobile network.”
Rogers will release details of the launch soon. In the meantime, customers can sign up for more information at rogers.com/revolution.

T-Mobile users certainly have a lot to get excited about, T-Mo has recently been either announcing or otherwise leaking out information about it’s upcoming lineup. Among the latest leaks is an internal document (screen shot of the inventory system) that shows an HTC “MYTOUCH 3G” handset. Now if you know your T-Mobile, you’ll remember that ‘MyTouch’ was one of the options given to T-Mo users during a survey that sought to find a suitable name for the HTC Magic. Those of you who want to kick their G1s can now polish their boots for the occasion. MyTouch will be available in colors black, white and merlot. As a by the by, you may have noticed that the HTC Touch Pro2is also mentioned. No more TELUS envy for us. So what’s it gonna be, MyTouch or Touch Pro2?

While we know for sure that Europe is getting the HTC Magic aka G2 far before North America, and that Vodafone will be the carrier for most of Europe, there remained a little question as regards to whose gonna bring to the Italians? Well the answer has arrived and it’s going to be TIM. The HTC Magic has officially appeared on TIM’s website and the release date is May 4 (a day before Vodafone releases it). There’s even a price tag, €449 to be precise.

Glad tidings for those in the UK. If you’ve been counting the days till you could get your hands on the Cupcake powered Android HTC Magic, you’ll be pleased as pie to know Vodafone says those who pre-ordered can expect to get their Magic on May 5th. This is official people, Vodafone has put the news up on its website. And there’s more, the Magic will be offered for free on all tariffs greater than £ 30. Good for the English, now what about the Yanks? Are the freedom loving people of USA supposed to put down wallets full of money to get their Magic/G2? T-Mobile, do something.

How bad do you want the ‘cupcake’ on your G1? Very bad, well you can have it. That’s right, thanks to the guys over at XDA-developers, who have been playing with the software on their G1 s for a week or so now, and more importantly sing songs of praise to a guy named Haykuro, who ported the software from the G2/HTC Magic onto the G1. You have the cupcake ready to be rocking on your G1. You will need a little work to get it in the groove though, but an average user ought to be able to set it up, with the great tutorials over at the XDA-developers forum and helpful community itself. All of the APNs for T-Mobile USA and AT&T, etc come pre-loaded within the software. Google, HTC…you have been outmaneuvered. Haykuro’s blog has all that you want.
Thank you Haykuro

Last time T-Mobile had a private launch event, it ended with the announcement of the G2. So, bearing that precedent in mind, what should one think about another private launch party that Tmo is holding on April 21st? G2? Very very likely, though wishful thinking may lead you to expect the HTC Touch Pro or even the sidekick (if you’re a teenager), but chances are might strong it may well be the G2. Now we have something to sit around and twiddle our thumbs over.

Right so all ye Americans who felt Euro-envy on not getting any of the action on HTC Magic aka G2 can now breathe a sigh of relief. Seems like the FCC has been very very busy putting the HTC Magic through its paces, and the G2 now finally has their seal of approval. So wha’ts the G2 that the G1 ain’t got? Only T-Mobile’s special 1700 MHz band of HSPA tacked on top of the 2100 MHz band for Europe and Asia, as well as support for Wi-Fi with UMA for Hotspot@Home. HTC apparently also realized that when it comes to pixel count, more is good. The G2 has ditched the old 3.2 megapixel camera and now supports a 5 megapixel shooter. Well, that’s the last of the dramatic changes, the rest of the G2 will the same as the Magic on Vodafone. Let’s see if we see this bad boy at CITA.

Life of the HTC magic was in danger when a few weeks ago due to an accusation from IPCom for infringed patents of a baseband chipset that was supplied to the Taiwanese manufacturers, hence they don’t have intellectual property rights over it. For the time being the appellate court has decided to suspend the investigation and will hear out the two companies in four weeks. This at least gives HTC the opportunity to launch the Magic for now, but later launch of devices containing the chipsets may be in danger. The current HTC handsets which are on the market aren’t in any patent danger, just the ones HTC will launch bearing the new chipset.

It’s common knowledge that HTC is the largest manufacturer of Windows Mobile devices, but it’s also the largest manufacturer of Android phones…with just one smartphone, the G1. Lady luck seems to be smiling on HTC, since other manufacturers have either only just started working on their Android devices or have cancelled them. HTC, on the other hand is quite ambitious about the Android platform.
At a Merrill Lynch technology conference, held in Taipei, HTC executives were asked whether the rumors that HTC is to release five new handsets, running Google’s OS, were true. Peter Chou, HTC CEO, replied that his company plans to release “at least” three Android-powered devices in the course of this year. With the HTC Magic coming up on Vodafone in Europe soon, this claim could have substance. Of course the Magic is more like a QWERTY-less G1, no earth shattering technology in that. Let’s just hope HTC ups its game and brings out more interesting handsets along with meeting its year 2009 release aspirations.
