News for Storm users, Google just announced a few days ago that Google Maps on the Verizon BlackBerry Storm will now use GPS for My Location. That’s right, you lot now get to use Google Maps tailored to utilize the built in GPS of the Storm. Just point your browser here and get the latest version of Google Maps. The new version reportedly adds to accuracy in both My Location as well as Latitude. Sad part of this news, this is only for the Storm, even if you have an internal GPS like the BlackBerry 8130, you still won’t be getting GPS love on My Location.
Well Google has done something nice for the iPhone and iPod Touch users. It has brought its popular PC application Google Earth to the iPhone and iPod Touch.
With Google Earth on your iPhone, you have the luxury of browsing the world in 3D. The experience has been crafted to be as close to the PC as possible. Google Earth for the iPhone also supports over 8 million Panoramio photos along letting users to read a number of Wikipedia articles about the different locations they are viewing. The software is available for download in 18 languages in 22 countries through Apple’s App Store.
The iPhone and iPod Touch’s accelerometer has been integrated with the application, which means that as you tilt and turn the phone, it gives a better 3D viewing experience. The built-in GPS feature will also tell you your location, but while it was being tested yesterday on the iPhone, it seemed a bit inaccurate.
The application runs pretty fast and smooth on a 3G network. It’s free for all you iPhone users and iPod Touch folks. The Google team on their blog re-instated their commitment to putting the globe in everyone’s pocket. So I guess we can expect further innovations from Google yet. Check out the Demo video of how to use the Google Earth Application on your iPhone/iPod Touch.
