Nokia’s latest n-series cell phone, the Nokia N96 is already taking in pre-orders at Nokia Flagship stores in New York and Chicago as well as Amazon.
The N96 is a sleek dual slide design that is not only a clever invention, but also makes the cell easier to use. It is Nokia’s latest 3G smartphone featuring an upgrade of Series 60 from 3.1 to 3.2. It is part of Nokia’s extremely popular n-series and is the direct successor to the N95.
It has a color TFT display screen on the N96 is a large 6.1 inch diagonal display and displays up to 16 million colors on a QVGA LCD screen with a screen resolutions are 240 x 320 pixels. Like the N81, everything on the N96 is flush except the Directional Pad and the Multimedia Key. This gives it a much lighter appearance and minimalistic look than the N95.
The N96 has been packed with the latest features. It has the latest N-Gage gaming support. Nokia has basically tried to and succeeded at removing all the flaws from the N95. While the N95 had been adored for the innovative features it brought, the N96 will gain fan fare for its refinement. Despite being slightly bigger and bulkier than its older brother, but it has a slicker shinier surface, the hinges move like silk so you get easy slides. It has built-in memory of 16 GB and microSD support. There is touch pad navigation, a built-in quick stand for viewing videos. Nokia has put in a 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens camera. Hence image capturing is much better than it used to be, improving both picture as well as video quality. There is integrated DVB-H tuner for Mobile TV so it’s not a complete reincarnation. Also, the N95 had corners like a tin can. The N95, thankfully, has rounded smooth corners.
Now for the price banger. Considering that the N96 is really an upgrade to the N95, and there’s a lot left to be wanting still (such as a touch screen maybe) Nokia is asking for a hefty $900-$1000 price. Users in Europe and Asia Pacific who have used it are somewhat satisfied, but that really is a result of what you wanted from your smartphone to begin with. The rather larger size may make it a not-so-popular smartphone for ladies. If you’d like, you can see the N96 demo.
